The first annual Maryland Crab Bowl was held on Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University. The game pitted all-stars from the Baltimore area against all-stars from the Washington area. Eight players from the MIAA were rewarded with the honor of playing in the game, while three others were selected but could not play due to injury. All of the eight players were playing in their last high school game but will play college football in the fall.

On Tuesday afternoon Loyola Blakefield (0-3-1) and Mount St. Joseph (5-2-0) ice hockey teams faced off for what would be the first of their three regular season games. Just one day earlier, St. Joe defeated conference rivals Archbishop Spalding by a score of 7-0, while the Don’s were coming off a tie to Boys’ Latin and were still looking for their first win on the year.

Dons Playing for Spot in History Books

Ten down, one to go. When Loyola-Blakefield plays Calvert Hall Thursday in the 89th Turkey Bowl at M&T Bank Stadium, the Dons will be looking to become the just the third unbeaten football team in school history -- and the first to win 11 games.

"That's never been done," said John Stewart, dean of students at Loyola. "We've had two other teams finish unbeaten but never with that many wins. And the 1960 team's the only other Loyola team to finish unbeaten and untied."

The Loyola College men's soccer team (18-1-1) nailed down another berth to the NCAA College Cup Monday, earning a No. 9 seed and a first-round bye, thanks to a group of area players who have carried on the rich Baltimore-Greyhounds tradition -- senior Josh Taylor (Archbishop Curley) and sophomores Mike Deasel (Loyola Blakefield), Mike Gill (Calvert Hall), Kyle Wittman (Calvert Hall) and Wade McHugh (McDonogh) and freshman Vince DiPino (Dulaney).

Poly's Rally Punches Playoff Ticket

With the game, the season and their careers on the line, Poly seniors Jon Marcus and Arnold Farmer simply refused to lose.

"Coach [Roger Wrenn] pulled me up at halftime," said senior co-captain Farmer, "and said, 'If we're going to win, the seniors are going to have to get it done.'"

And they did.

Poly came back from a 13-0 halftime deficit to beat City, 16-13, in the 120th renewal of this classic rivalry at M&T Bank Stadium.

Alumni Profile: Akira Fitzgerald

Former Loyola Blakefield goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald had some big shoes to fill heading into his junior year at Wake Forest University. He spent his first two seasons playing behind and learning from goalkeeper Brian Edwards, who was rock solid in the net for the Demon Deacons.

But, Fitzgerald knew that with Edwards graduating after the 2007 season he would have an excellent chance to take over the starting spot.

It has been a tough month both on and off the field for Brian Abbott and his Loyola-Blakefield High School football team. Last month, 17-year-old Dennis Woolford, a member of the Dons' soccer team and a kicker on the football team, died in a car accident. Two weeks ago, starting quarterback Leon Kinnard broke his leg in a game against Mount St. Joseph's.

St. Mary's 14, Archbishop Spalding 7 (Friday)

Neil Lewnes ran 23 times for 131 yards to lead the Saints past the Cavaliers. Lewnes rushed in for what would be the deciding score from 2 yards out in the third quarter to put St. Mary's ahead 14-0, capping off an 80-yard drive that ate up over half of the quarter.

The Saints have now won three in a row and are 5-1 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference and 5-4 overall. All three non-conference losses came to A Conference opponents.

Gilman 49, Boys' Latin 0 (Saturday)

Blake Countess scored three Gilman touchdowns (90-yard kick return, 15-yard pass from Giancarlo Simmons and a 48-yard pass from David Emala) in this non-conference game. Woody Williams had two scores (13- and 15-yard runs) as Gilman improved to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in MIAA A Conference. Marcus Holman returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Boys' Latin dropped to 3-4 overall.
