Calvert Hall News and Notes

Calvert Hall finished 10th in the Nike Southeastern Regional cross country championship last weekend in Hoover, Ala. The event was invitation only.

The Cardinals were selected after winning the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title and the State Private School Championship just three days apart earlier this month. They finished 10th out of 16 teams.

The race was broken up into four divisions for team points -- championship, junior varsity, freshman and small school, but was run in one race overall with 172 runners.

Anthony Rowe was the top Cardinal, finishing in 20th place in a time of 16 minutes and 48.8 seconds. Chris Swisko finished 47th in 17:19.5. John Fitzgerald took 53rd in 17:23.7 while teammate Ryan Holleran ended up 56th with a time of 17:25.6.

Sean Caskey’s time of 17:36.9 earned him a 72nd place finish and completed the Cardinals’ scoring at 231 points. Logan Pasqual and Nick Rowe ran well but didn’t score points.

The JV team fared better than the varsity by winning the smaller three-team JV division with 29 points. Calvert Hall squeezed by Western Cary (32) by three points, and the Cardinals easily beat third-place Birmingham Trail (76 points).

Trent Seawell won the individual division title with a time of 17:23.2. Teammate Kenny Motsay played a pivotal role in the victory, as his time of 18:05.3 beat out Western Cary’s Gabe Reynolds and Stephen Baulch by one-tenth and four-tenths of a second, respectively, helped them pull out the victory.

The strong JV performances show why Calvert Hall should be tough to beat again next year in the MIAA A Conference. The Cardinals had little trouble winning both the conference and private school state championships this season.

In other private school action, John Carroll’s Erika Stasakova and Nicole Clarke finished 36th and 63rd in the Foot Locker Regional Cross Country championships last weekend.
