Calvert Hall Swimmers Start Quickly

The Calvert Hall swimming team has started quickly, beginning this season with a 2-1 record, a change from last season when the Cardinals finished 4-6.

The Cardinals scored a big victory in their home opener, capturing every swimming event as they cruised past St. Mary’s, 92-60. This was a nice early-season upset as the Saints posted a 6-0 record last season.

Gonzaga rolled to a 97-73 victory over Calvert Hall to start the season before the Cardinals turned things around. Calvert Hall came back with an 86-84 victory against DeMatha in which a number of good swimmers performed well. Arny Warren captured the 100-meter butterfly and Mike Thomas scored victories in the 200 and 500 freestyles.

The Cardinals followed that performance with a close victory over longtime rival McDonogh, edging the Eagles, 89-81.

The team fell behind by 16 points going into the 100 freestyle, but with strong leadership by Warren, the Cards were able to win the 100 backstroke and the 400 freestyle relay to guarantee the eight-point victory.

Calvert Hall will likely use this strong start to its advantage heading into a meet with struggling Mount St. Joseph (0-2) along with St. John’s College in Washington, D.C. and Severn School (4-1 in the conference last year).
