Gaels Win Three in a Row

The defending champion Mount St. Joseph indoor track team has shown it is once again the team to beat in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association as the Gaels began the season winning three consecutive conference meets in style.

St. Joe used its strong depth to rack up points for new coach Vince Fuller. He took over after Gene Constantine retired after a long and successful career.

The Gaels scored 114 points in their group meet last Friday, earning points in all but two events, including an impressive 66 points in the field events. Teams that rack up points in both field and running events can be tough to beat.

St. Joe scored eight points in the shot put, 10 in the pole vault, 22 in the long jump, 16 in the triple jump and 10 in the high jump. They also scored 19 points in the 55-meter hurdles, six in the 55-meter dash and 10 more in the 500.

In the first MIAA group meet of the year, St. Joe scored 105 points, easily beating a strong Loyola Blakefield team by 34.7 points. The Gaels scored 21 points in the 55 hurdles, 20 in the 55 dash and 10 in the 300 dash. They earned also scored six points in the shot put, eight in the pole vault and 10 in the high jump.

At the next MIAA group meet, the Gaels beat Gilman by 39, thanks once again to their sprinters, who kept racking up points in many places due to strong efforts from Darren McKoy, Dorian Johnson, Paul Moore and others.
