Dons Swimmers Win 15th Straight

Loyola Blakefield won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference swimming championship last Saturday, a feat that wasn’t new for the host Dons, who have won 15 straight titles.

The school has won every title since the Maryland Scholastic Association changed into the MIAA plus the final championship the MSA held, giving the Dons 15 in a row.

Loyola accumulated 365 points, which was more than enough to hold off runner-up McDonogh. The Eagles finished with 248, edging out third-place Calvert Hall by four points.

The 200-meter medley relay team of Sean Roddy, Greg Pelton, Evan Danz and Hugh Davison led Loyola, taking first in a meet-record and All-American time of 1:36.04.

Calvert Hall’s team of David Newton, Patrick Spearman, Tommy Everett and Brian Sweeney came in second despite having an All-American time of 1:36.66.

Danz, Pelton and Davison later teamed up with Oliver Bennett to win the 400 freestyle relay in a meet record time of 3:09.26. Roddy won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.35, while Pelton won the 100 freestyle in 47.58.

Giles Smith of McDonogh won three events for the Eagles, taking home the title in the 50 freestyle (20.95), 100 butterfly (51.07), and he was a member of the first-place 200 freestyle relay team that won in 1:28.21. He also was on the Eagles' second-place 400 freestyle relay team that raced to a time of 3:11.57.

The Loyola 400 Free Relay record time was also an All-American time and broke a school record that had stood since 1980!
