Team Maryland Softball Heading To Italy

Later this summer, 15 of the best girls softball players in the area will take the trip of a lifetime to Italy to play a series of games against some of the best Italian teams.

North County coach Tom Thompson and assistant Alan Haddaway will coach the team, which consists of girls from 13 area high schools. Thompson was approached by America's Team International about putting the team together.

"I sent letters to a lot of area school athletic directors and coaches I know," Thompson said. "They sent me back some of their better players who may be interested, and we came up with 15 girls. We have a great group of kids, and we are very excited."

The trip is set for July 28-Aug. 5 and will include six games in Milan, Florence and Rome. The team has been practicing once a month at the new Sandlot-BWI Academy on Ordnance Road in Glen Burnie, which includes a new batting cage and baseball-softball training facility owned by Bob Lubaszewski.

Hi Keith, I enjoyed the article!!! I played softball for the Grosseto team about eight years ago and had an amazing time touring Tuscany playing teams such as Florence. The Americans will crush the Italians and have the experience of a lifetime doing so! *smile* Just tell them to prepare to sweat, because it is REALLY hot playing on those fields in the middle of the summer!
