Gaels' Hopes Dashed

The Mount St. Joseph lacrosse team's hopes of making the eight-team Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs were dashed after losing both of their games last week against Calvert Hall and Severn.

The Gaels (7-9 overall) were in 10th place in the MIAA A Conference entering the week by virtue of a 1-5 record and were two games behind eighth-place St. Paul's (3-3). Severn was in ninth place at 2-4. But Mount St. Joe fell to 1-7 and remained in 10th place in the conference, and St. Paul's and Severn both moved to 3-5 and in a tie for eighth.

Two games behind the eighth and final playoff spot and head-to-head tiebreakers not in their favor, the Gaels are pretty much done. They are scheduled to finish their season today against McDonogh.

The Gaels lost to Calvert Hall, 13-4, Friday, to effectively put Mount St. Joe out of the race for eighth. Rod White led Mount St. Joe with two goals, with Andrew McCrumb and Chris Costabile each adding a goal. Josh Schulz and Travis Puls each had one assist, and Zach Hynson had nine saves in net.

Mount St. Joe fell to Severn, 14-9, Tuesday.

Before this week, Mount St. Joe got it lone conference win of the year against Boys' Latin, 14-9, April 25. McCrumb and Puls both had three goals, while Justin Lea, Jake Willertz and Costabile all had two goals apiece. Dominic Serio and Brandon Kendrick both added one goal.

Costabile and Serio both had three assists against Boys' Latin. Larkin had two assists, with Lea and Willertz adding one assist each. Hynson had 17 saves in the game.

The Gaels lost in overtime to Archbishop Spalding, 9-8, April 22. Serio had four goals, Costabile had a pair, while James Davis and McCrumb both registered one goal. Steven Spindler and McCrumb each had one assist.

Mount St. Joe lost to St. Paul's, 15-4, April 18. Willertz had two goals, while Davis and Serio had one goal apiece. Hynson had 13 saves in net, and Matolo had four saves.

Chapelgate Christian (9-5 overall, 6-3 MIAA B Conference) went 2-3 in its last five games, four of which were against conference opponents.

The Yellow Jackets lost to John Carroll, 17-8, last Tuesday. Grant Shipley led the Yellow Jackets with three goals, while Chris Carlson and Luke Herwig both had two goals. Carlson also got two assists. Zach Bruce rounded out the scoring with one goal and had assists. Brian Olson had 21 saves.

The Yellow Jackets had a 14-13 non-conference loss to Howard in overtime, April 25. Bruce and Carlson each had three goals to lead Chapelgate. Herwig and Shipley both had two goals, with Logan Skovron, Josh Rufolo and Paul Smallman all adding single goals. Carlson and Herwig had two assists each, and Rufolo and Jimmy Becker both had one assist. Olson had 15 saves.

The Yellow Jackets defeated St. Vincent Pallotti, 13-10, April 24. Carlson had four goals and four assists to lead Chapelgate, while Shipley also had four goals. Bruce and Herwig scored two goals apiece and Schuman had one goal. Jesse Schuman, Rufulo and Shipley all added single assists. Olson had nine saves.

The Yellow Jackets lost to Park, 13-8, April 17, and Chapelgate defeated Sts. Peter and Paul, 13-8, April 15, to begin its 2-3 stretch.

The Yellow Jackets were set to complete the regular season this week.
