John Carroll Goes Wire to Wire

The John Carroll girls lacrosse team truly had a perfect season.

The Patriots completed their unmarked 18-0 season with an 11-6 victory over McDonogh in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship this past weekend at St.Paul’s Levering Field.

This was John Carroll’s second consecutive IAAM A Conference championship. The Patriots won last year’s crown in overtime.

In fact, John Carroll became the first team to ever win back to back IAAM A conference titles. After surviving with 12-11 and 13-12 victories over St. Paul’s and Notre Dame Prep, respectively, the Patriots had to fight to finally put away the Eagles.

McDonogh cut the John Carroll lead to 6-5 early in the second half. But the Patriots finished the game on a 5-1 run and cruised to the title.

Allyson Carey had been John Carroll’s top scorer this season, but she was held pointless in the title game. However, teammates Grace Gaeng and Brittany Dashiell each contributed three goals -- which was more than enough for the Patriots to clinch the title.

Cori Gray and Katie Kiriazoglou had two goals and an assist, while Casey Ancarrow tallied four assists of her own. Goaltender Lauren McGehee had 10 saves in the victory.

The remarkable season included an 18-9 win over perennial powerhouse Mount Hebron, and nine athletes going on to play lacrosse at the collegiate level including Carey (Vanderbilt) and Ancarrow (James Madison).
