Once again, Gene Hoffman walked off with the Hoffman Cup.
Hoffman is the coach of Archbishop Curley's track team, and because of his enormous contribution to area track and field, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association named its championship trophy after the Friars' 34-year coach. And once again, his team stepped up and made sure the Hoffman Cup would stay in the Hoffman household.
Behind a brilliant performance from senior George Chambers, the Friars beat Mount St. Joseph, 112-109, to win its third straight conference championship.
Chambers won two individual events (the 200-meter in 14.8 seconds and the 400 in 50.1) and helped the Friars win the 800 relay and finish third in the 1,600 relay, which ultimately clinched Curley's team championship.
Eric Franklin joined Chambers on the 800 relay team and also won the 110 hurdles while Jerome Junior also ran on the winning 800 relay team and won the high jump.
Calvert Hall's Ian Rowe won the 1,600 and finished second in the 3,200 while Joe Orsulak Jr., son of the former Orioles outfielder, won the 800 in 1:56.08.
Mount St. Joe won three events: Dorian Johnson in the long jump, Andy Darmody in the pole vault and Renard Robinson, Marcus Stanbeck, Darren McCoy and Artis Holt in the 400 relay. Gilman's Jabulani Blyden won the 300 hurdles while McDonogh's J.P. Grant edged Derek Mitchell in the 100.
McDonogh's girls won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship, beating Seton Keough, 196-103, as sophomore Amanda Kimbers and Kristen Brown dominated the meet. Kimbers won the 100 (12.2), 200 (25.2) and was a member of the winning 400 relay team while Brown won 100 and 300 hurdles and the long jump and ran on the Eagles winning 400-meter relay team.
