Friars, Dons Shine

The Archbishop Curley track team continued its strong early-season work with a good effort last weekend in Virginia.

The Friars had little trouble winning at the 24th Annual Captain's Class. They easily finished first out of 18 teams at the event held at Christopher Newport University in Hampton Roads, Va.

The Friars scored in all 17 events, finishing with an impressive 178.5 points, more than enough to crush runner-up Jamestown, who finished with 100.5 points.

The 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams, both led by Eric Franklin, won in times of 43.7 and 3:39 respectively, while the 3,200-meter relay team took second in a time of 8:43.

Franklin also won the 110 hurdles in 14.6 and the 300 individual hurdles in 40.4. Jerome Junior finished third in the 100 and used a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump.

Teammate Chris Sonin won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet and 2 inches.

Senior Joe Orsulak won the 800 in a time of 1:59.75. He was the lone runner in the event to break the two-minute mark in one of his fastest times of the season.

The 3,200 relay team used a time of 8:12.09 to win the race. Senior Casey Kielty finished sixth in the pole vault.
