'Melo Named to Olympic Team

For the second time in his brief career, Carmelo Anthony has been named to the U.S. Olympic basketball team. He was one of 12 players selected earlier this week by coach Mike Krzyzewski and USA Basketball and will look to continue what has been a productive last three years of international competition.

Anthony, who played three years of high school ball at Towson Catholic under coach Mike Daniel before transferring to Oak Hill Academy in 2001, averaged just two points a game during the 2004 Athens Olympics but exploded during the 2006 World Championships in Japan. Anthony averaged 19 points a game and set the U.S. single-game scoring record in August 2006 when he scored 35 points against Italy.

The area will also be represented on the U.S. team by Severna Park's Steve Wojciechowski, the former Cardinal Gibbons standout and Duke assistant coach, who will assist Krzyzewski and his staff on the Olympic team.

The U.S. team went through a three-day mini camp this week in Las Vegas and will take part in a five-day training camp July 20-25. The team plays its first game Aug. 10 against China.
