Preps Scene Will Miss Scott Garceau

Scott Garceau's semi-retirement from Channel 2 after 28 years anchoring local sports is a loss for the local high school sports scene. Garceau and I worked together at WMAR-TV for nearly 20 years, and there has never been a stronger, more passionate advocate of boys and girls prep sports.

For nearly 10 years, Garceau has been the voice of the annual Turkey Day football game between Loyola Blakefield and Calvert Hall, and he has been the emcee of the McCormick Unsung Hero Awards banquet for the last 15 years.

His Friday afternoon and Friday night football highlights have been a staple through his entire tenure at WMAR, while his nightly sportscasts routinely included boys and girls lacrosse, basketball, track and field, baseball, wrestling and field hockey highlights.

From 1988 to 2005, Channel 2 produced a weekly series called "Prep Profile," which honored nearly 500 community-involved athletes over the years, and Garceau was a regular contributor to the high school highlights segment on "Sunday Sports Extra," which Garceau first started hosting in 1980 and is now hosted by Rob Carlin.

Garceau will continue to do play-by-play for the Loyola-Calvert Hall football game as well as the station’s college lacrosse game of the week, which has featured hundreds of local high school players in its 10-year run.

He will also call Saturday's Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic for Channel 2, along with former Loyola midfielder Mark Dixon.

The girls underclass game will be played at 2 p.m., the boys at 4 p.m. The senior girls game begins at 6 p.m. and the boys play at 8 p.m. All games will be played at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University.
