St. Joe, Pallotti Head To Break Undefeated

Mount St. Joseph’s 4-0 record is currently the best record in the MIAA A conference. Among the players helping the Gaels to an undefeated start include junior Karl Green, who is ranked number one in the 285 lb. weight class. He won the MIAA title, and placed fifth in the National Prep Tournament. Juniors Bobby Bowman and Benny Schaufele, as well as sophomore Alex Rice, also have contributed to the undefeated record. With the return of junior Frank Goodwin (119 lbs.), who went 49-5 and was a runner-up at Nationals last year, Mount St. Joe will be a tough opponent to face.

The first annual Maryland Crab Bowl was held on Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University. The game pitted all-stars from the Baltimore area against all-stars from the Washington area. Eight players from the MIAA were rewarded with the honor of playing in the game, while three others were selected but could not play due to injury. All of the eight players were playing in their last high school game but will play college football in the fall.

Thanksgiving Day, 1969. Longtime local soccer player and coach Joe Speca stood in the middle of Radecke Field in East Baltimore and proclaimed the First Annual Turkey Bowl was under way.

"It was Thanksgiving morning and it was just a normal practice of the St. Anthony's 14-16 CYO soccer team," Dino Mangione said. "Joey Speca coached the team and he stood there and jokingly called it the Turkey Bowl. That was long before Calvert Hall and Loyola started calling their game the Turkey Bowl."

The Loyola College men's soccer team (18-1-1) nailed down another berth to the NCAA College Cup Monday, earning a No. 9 seed and a first-round bye, thanks to a group of area players who have carried on the rich Baltimore-Greyhounds tradition -- senior Josh Taylor (Archbishop Curley) and sophomores Mike Deasel (Loyola Blakefield), Mike Gill (Calvert Hall), Kyle Wittman (Calvert Hall) and Wade McHugh (McDonogh) and freshman Vince DiPino (Dulaney).

Gilman 49, Boys' Latin 0 (Saturday)

Blake Countess scored three Gilman touchdowns (90-yard kick return, 15-yard pass from Giancarlo Simmons and a 48-yard pass from David Emala) in this non-conference game. Woody Williams had two scores (13- and 15-yard runs) as Gilman improved to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in MIAA A Conference. Marcus Holman returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Boys' Latin dropped to 3-4 overall.

Mount St. Joseph 21, McDonogh 14 (Saturday)

Stephen Spindler's 36-yard interception return for a touchdown capped a 21-point fourth quarter barrage by the Gaels in this MIAA A Conference game. Mount St. Joseph (4-1 overall, 2-0 conference) also got scores from Brandon Kendrick (6-yard pass from Chris Costabile) and Gentry White (1-yard run). McDonogh (2-5, 1-3) scored on touchdowns from Rob Owen (19-yard pass from Rudy Johnson) and Chris Davila (4-yard run), but it wasn't enough.

The good news for local football teams might be the fact that the Loyola offensive machine gets the week off. Quarterback Leon Kinnard and the Dons have been pounding their opponents this season en route to a 6-0 start- the most recent decision being a 55-14 rout of McDonogh last week.

But Loyola next takes the field next weekend against MIAA A Conference rival Mount St. Joseph. The Gaels have another tough game this weekend, meeting McDonogh, as both schools are trying to rebound from last week's losses.

Mount St. Joseph 28, Georgetown Prep 12 (Saturday)

Mount St. Joseph scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal its victory over Georgetown Prep in a MIAA A Conference game. The fourth-quarter points came from touchdown runs by Leroy Bradford (29 yards) and Chris Costabile (one yard).

MIAA A Conference Soccer Play - Tuesday

Gilman 1, Loyola 0

Gilman's Diego McQuestion scored the game's only goal for Gilman (now 2-1-2 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference). The goal was assisted by Reid Barger's throw-in with six minutes left in the first half.

Gilman's Christian Hall had six saves and Loyola's Tim Pietsh had 10 saves. The loss dropped Loyola to 1-3-2.

Bull Run Invitational To Test Local Teams

The Bull Run Invitational, set for Saturday at Hereford, will have several good private school teams in the Small Schools division.

The Gilman boys could have a chance at making some noise in that division. The Greyhounds have gotten off to a good start this fall and will be tested in this meet, one of the state’s best each fall.

McDonogh also could do well while Park, Boys' Latin, Curley and Annapolis Area Christian School will be in that race.
